These diminutive little dogs have earned lots of admirers thanks to their striking appearance, big personalities and hypoallergenic coats.

1) How did you first hear about the Mini Schnauzer breed?
We’ve always known about the Mini Schnauzer breed, but didn’t research them in depth until we were deciding on what breed to get for our next puppy. We were looking for a versatile dog that is apartment-sized, could easily adapt to city living, and is high energy so we could bring him along with us on adventures.
2) Why do you think Mini Schnauzers are so popular?
Mini Schnauzer are popular because they are the perfect size, are very smart, and love to be around their people. They are very active and enjoy the outdoors, but are also totally content with snuggling and spending the whole day with you at home. They ranked #18 on AKC’s most popular dog breeds of 2020 list!
3) How would you describe the size of your Mini Schnauzer, Mushu?
Mushu’s size is on the upper end of normal and is now almost the same size and weight as his parents. He currently stands about 12 inches tall and weighs 17 pounds. He is seven months now but will continue to fill out until he’s a year old.
4) How would you describe Mushu’s personality?
Mushu is incredibly loving and affectionate with us. He has a great temperament and makes us laugh every day because he’s a big goofball. When outdoors, he is very curious and is never afraid to explore new things.
5) How much exercise do Mini Schnauzers need?
Mini Schnauzers are considered a medium to high energy breed and will need at least an hour of exercise every day. They can easily adapt to city or country living and will be happy with running around in a large field or just a walk with their human. Mushu is very happy with 1 hour and 20 minutes of outdoor time every day, not including playtime.
6) Are Mini Schnauzers hypoallergenic?
Mini Schnauzers are hypoallergenic. They have a double coat and do not shed. Most have a soft and dense undercoat with a wiry outer coat, but some Mini Schnauzers remain soft their entire lives.
7) Do Mini Schnauzers require a lot of grooming?
They require regular grooming about every 4-6 weeks to get rid of the dead undercoat. At home, Mushu gets his hair brushed and combed, his teeth brushed, his nails trimmed, and his ears cleaned a couple times a week.
8) Do Mini Schnauzers make good pets for first-time owners?
Mini Schnauzers have the potential to be a good fit for first-time owners because they are easy to train and have moderate exercise needs. Because they are intelligent, they can be stubborn at times, but would still make excellent first pets with dedicated training during the first couple months of their lives.
9) Are Mini Schnauzers fussy eaters?
We can’t speak for all Mini Schnauzers, but Mushu is quite picky when it comes to his meals. He will eat any treat given to him but will sometimes refuse his kibble. This is one of the many reasons why we decided to switch to a raw diet, and Mushu has been loving it ever since!
10) Why did you decide to start an IG page for Mushu?
I honestly started an Instagram for Mushu because I was sending way too many pictures and videos of him to my friends when he was a baby. I thought having a dedicated account for him would make it easier for everyone to look back at his old photos. One of the best decisions I ever made!
11) What is your memory or post on Instagram of Mushu?
My favorite post on Instagram of Mushu is definitely his seven-month birthday post where he’s wearing his yellow party hat. His expression makes me laugh every time. He is always very patient and stays still for photos whenever I make him wear hats or clothing but I know deep down he hates it!
12) What advice would you have for someone starting an Instagram for their dog?
My advice for someone starting an Instagram for their dog is to just HAVE FUN! The main point is to share your dog’s life while connecting with other pets. Because of Instagram, we’ve met a ton of other great dogs in our area and now have regular puppy playdates.
13) Finally, what are the pros and cons of Mini Schnauzers based upon your experience?
Some pros of Mini Schnauzers are that they are affectionate, intelligent, and love to cuddle yet always ready for adventure. They also make good watchdogs while still being polite with strangers. Some cons are that they can be stubborn and some may have a high prey drive that requires training.
