TikTok is the new social media platform to take the world by storm.

Dog owners are heading over to the video-sharing platform in their droves after becoming disillusioned with Instagram.

JJ and Gigi (@heyjjwolf) have nearly one million followers on TikTok.

With 20 million hearts on their posts on the video-sharing app, this Border Collie-Pomeranian duo are two of the most-followed dogs on the platform.

We spoke to JJ and Gigi to learn more about their success on TikTok.

1) Can you give us some backstory about how you ended up with Jj and Gigi?

My daughter had wanted a dog for some time. We did some research into different breeds and decided on a Border Collie. We viewed a local litter of four week old Border Collies. We met both of Jj’s parents – who were extremely friendly and obedient. We instantly fell in love with Jj. And visited him every week for four weeks until he was old enough to be brought home.

We acquired Gigi, because we felt Jj would benefit from having a companion. We began looking at Pomeranians in particular, because we loved watching Jiffpom and King Kong da savage! on social media. Again, we looked into the personality traits of Pomeranians.

We saw a picture online of Gigi and on viewing her, knew she was the one for us.

2) What are the pros and cons of owing a Pomeranian?

In all honesty, there literally are no cons to owing a Pomeranian. Although, there are some precautions that you have to take. Gigi is a miniature Pomeranian. So super small! Therefore, if you are considering owing a Pomeranian, it may not be the best option if you have very young children at home. Who may be too boisterous during play.

Also, it is important not to leave your Pomeranian unattended whilst outside. Due to birds of prey and other prowlers in the area! I’ve heard some sad stories surrounding small dogs when they have been in their gardens! We have made a covered area in our garden for Gigi to help prevent this from happening!

The pros of owing a Pomeranian is unlimited. Our nickname for Gigi is ‘perfect pom’, because she truly is amazing! Gigi is highly affectionate, intelligent. Gigi has a loving and playful nature. Wherever I go, Gigi always follows – which I love.

3) What are the pros and cons to owing a Border Collie?

I feel truly blessed with both Jj and Gigi. Personally, there are no cons to owning a Border Collie. Although things to keep in mind with this breed is that they need a lot of physical and mental stimulation or their pent up energy can lead to destructive behaviour. We haven’t experienced this with Jj, though.

The pros of owing a border Border Collie is that they’re extremely clever and I often compare Jj to having the same mental ability as a two-year-old. He seems to know everything you say. Jj is very friendly and loving. He loves agility and ball games. And both Jj and Gigi make our family complete.

4) How did you first hear about TikTok?

We were initially on an app called musical.ly, which later became TikTok.

5) How does it feel to have amassed such a big following on TikTok?

It feels amazing! Initially we posted videos just for fun and never expected to acquire such a huge following. We feel truly blessed and thankful. To each and everyone of our followers, their support gives us so much inspiration, allowing us to continue making videos.

6) Did you have a particular video that went viral?

The most viewed video we have is the ‘Earth Song’ by lil’ Dicky. It currently has amassed over 6.2 million views on TikTok. Another video we are proud of is our ‘Friends’ video by Marshmello. We won a competition hosted by Marshmello and he posted our friends video on his TikTok page, which was a huge honour for us.

7) What tips and tricks would you have for other pet owners in TikTok?

I find that using the trending hashtags on the main page will get you more views on your videos. You can also use different hashtags like #pets or #foryoupage. This will also help you gain more views. Using the TikTok viral and trending sounds from the playlist is also a must! Furthermore, it’s really important to use good lighting. If you don’t have a ring light, you should film outside or by your window. You should try and post frequently, around three or five videos per week! It will help the algorithm to pick you up! And lastly, ask questions on your videos so people can comment and engage with you. This will help to create your fan base.

8) Do you prefer using TikTok over Instagram? If so, why?

I love using both Instagram and TikTok but I feel that they are very different apps. I love the energy on TikTok, it’s a fun place to be. I particularly enjoy using the trending hashtags as they inspire me to be more creative! I also love watching videos by other creators. TikTok is so much fun whether you are actively posting or just scrolling through the ‘for you’ page! TikTok has its own unique and awesome community, which I think is why it is so successful.

9) Will you celebrate reaching 1million?

Yes, yes and yes! We cannot wait to reach the one million milestone! It will feel like such an accomplishment.

10) What other TikTok dog accounts would you recommend to our followers?
