1) How did you first hear about the Alaskan Klee Kai breed?
The first time I heard about the breed was about six years ago, when I saw a picture of an Alaskan Klee Kai on 9gag. The dog looked like a husky but it had a toy between his paws, and in comparison you could see that the dog was way smaller than an actual Husky. So I looked through the comments and they said it was an Alaskan Klee Kai. And after that I couldn’t stop looking for pictures and information about these beautiful dogs.
2) How long have you had Baylee?
I picked her up at the airport on the 15th of June 2016, so nearly three years now.
3) Can you give an insight into Baylee’s personality?
An insight of Baylee’s personality? Well that’s kind of hard – but I’ll try.
She’s pretty stubborn and she’s definitely part cat. She’s pretty bitchy and can be difficult with dogs she doesn’t know. She’s quite a handful and is definitely not an easy dog.
But of course she has good characteristics, too. She can be totally affectionate but also needs some time on her own. Inside she’s a super calm dog but has so much energy when we’re outside. So she’s super adaptable. For me, she’s the perfect dog with this balanced personality.
4) What’s it like to own an Alaskan Klee Kai?
You always get all of the attention when you’re around people. Everywhere you hear “Is this a husky puppy?”, “Oh look, a mini husky!”, “Look at her eyes!”, “Oh she’s still so small, but she’ll grow a lot!”, “How old is she?”, “She need a lot of exercise right?” and so on…
5) Have you had any scary experiences with Baylee with regards to recall?
Absolutely! Her recall is only good when she’s on a long leash. But as soon as she’s totally off leash, it’s pretty bad. The worst is when she escapes on her own, so when she runs out of the door or jumps out of the car without permission. In these moments, she’s like a wild animal, she doesn’t listen to any commands, she runs away as soon as you get near her, it’s nearly impossible to catch her.
The scariest experience so far was when she jumped out of my car when we were visiting a friend. She lives in a quiet street, but the next busy street is pretty close. We were three people trying to catch her for nearly an hour. She didn’t run very far, and we saw her every few minutes, but with the busy street so close, I was so afraid that she might get hit by a car. After one of the longest hours ever, we managed to lure her into my friend’s fenced garden, where she immediately was her normal self and was happy to see me again.
6) Does Baylee suffer from separation anxiety like many other AKK?
Yeah she does. When I got her I immediately started to train to leave her alone and it worked really well. But as I’m still living with my parents, there’s someone at home most of the time so she doesn’t really have any routine of being alone at home. Somehow it’s kind of okay for her to be alone at home when my parents are the ones who leave her alone. But when I’m the last one who’s leaving the house, she’s whining and howling all of the time.
7) How much exercise does Baylee get/require a day?
She’s a super calm dog when we’re at home, so far I’ve never experienced her require any exercise, as long as we’re inside she’s sleeping all day. On a normal week day we’re outside for about one and a half hour, but of course there are also days on which our walkies are only about 30 minutes. But I don’t really think she has any problems with that. On the other hand, she can run the whole day without getting tired. So we love to do long hikes on the weekends.
8) How much attention does Baylee get during your adventures in Germany and around Europe?
We always get a lot of attention and that’s not including the people who actually talk to me and ask all these questions about Baylee. You always notice some people staring at you and whispering.
One time we went to Amsterdam and there was a big tourist group of about 30 people surrounding us. We were both totally overwhelmed and we were happy and relieved when we could escape from this situation.
9) Are there many other Alaskan Klee Kai in Germany?
So far I’ve met two other Klee Kai from Germany (before I got Baylee). And I know about approximately 10 other AKK in Germany. There are probably some more, but I don’t think there are a lot.
10) What’s the most common question you get asked about Baylee?
The most common question is if she’s a Husky puppy and how old she is.
11) What advice would you have for someone thinking about an Alaskan Klee Kai as a pet?
If you want to get an Alaskan Klee Kai, you’ll need a lot of patience. I also think experience with cats can be more helpful, than experience with dogs. Baylee definitely is really cat like, and no will to please at all.
12) Why did you decide to start an Instagram page for Baylee?
I had the feeling that I started to annoy my friends and family when time came closer to picking up Baylee. I was always talking about how excited I am and everything. But I didn’t want to stop talking about it, so I started the account to talk to people who are interested in it. And also all the pictures I took of Baylee, I didn’t want to spam my personal Instagram or Facebook account with them, but still wanted to show them to people. So a Instagram account for Baylee seemed to be the perfect way.
13) What’s the secret to your success on Instagram?
Well success is maybe a bit too much! We do have some followers but the algorithm stole all of our reach and likes. But well, that’s a different topic! I’ve always been very active on Instagram myself, looking at, liking and commenting on pictures. But the high quality pictures are probably part of it as well.
14) Do you have a favourite Instagram post of your 581 so far?
My favorite post is probably my most recent one. I really like all the pictures I post. I absolutely love all of the pictures I look in Étretat this January because of the beautiful landscapes. And also this one picture a friend of mine took of me and Baylee (above)!
