If you’re looking to transition your dog onto healthier meals that are balanced and complete, have you considered air-dried food?

A growing number of pet parents in the UK are ditching store-bought food in favour of fresh dog food companies that provide high quality meals and ship direct to your door.

It really couldn’t be easier to feed your dog healthy and nutritious meals comprised of whole ingredients sourced in the UK to promote a happy and long life for your canine companion.

You may be surprised to learn that some of the traditional dog food brands can contain additives, fillers and nasties in their food, which could potentially lead to digestive problems, or perhaps you just have picky dogs like mine.

However, air-dried fresh dog food companies tend to only use high-quality ingredients that are wholesome and grain-free to allow your dog to eat just as healthy as the rest of the family.

Pure Pet Food are one company looking to feed British dogs what they describe as “100% natural, human-grade” meals to ensure our furry pooches get to enjoy long healthy lives.

In this article, we’re going to take a look at how Pure Pet Food works, the recipes on offer, how much their service and what other customers are saying about it.

Pure Pet Food write on their website that they’re attempting to bring some “pure common sense” back to dog food.

Operating from their base in Yorkshire, Pure Pet Food believe natural, healthy pet food is the best way to feed British dogs. I agree.

It’s reassuring to learn that all of Pure Pet Food’s meals are created in their human-grade kitchen in Yorkshire using the same quality ingredients that you’d find in your own food without any hidden nasties.

Unlike some other dog food delivery companies that I’ve previously reviewed, Pure Pet Food use an air-dried method to lock in all the goodness. Their website explains that by air-drying their natural, human-grade ingredients, moisture is removed and nutrients are locked in.

Pure Pet Food add that their recipes are regulated by both pet and human food regulatory boards to maintain a high level of food safety and quality. So you can have peace of mind knowing that your dog’s food meets the highest standard.

Their website explains their recipes have been formulated by nutritionists and backed by vets, including Dr Julian Norton who some readers might recognize from TV.

Pure Pet Food will tailor your dog’s food to meet their specific needs, which is something I always look for in a dog food company.

You can have the ultimate convenience of your dog’s food being shipped direct to your door so you won’t have to worry about getting store-bought food ever again. In these Covid-19 times, this convenience shouldn’t be understated.

How Pure Pet Food Works

When you land on Pure Pet Food’s website, it is attractive and easy to navigate. I like the simple and sleek approach compared to some dog food websites that can be overwhelming.

It’s easy to generate a custom meal plan for your dog. You just need to fill in some key details such as name, age and weight.

They provide pet parents with the chance to indicate whether their dog has food allergies and list what protein sources they’re sensitive to. This is a great feature which I really appreciated as someone with Klee Kai who have sensitive tummies.

You can also list whether your dog is not fussy, fussy or very fussy, as well as detailing their body type.

To give Pure Pet Food a clear idea about your dog’s dietary habits, you’ll be asked to list their current food.

Once you’ve filled completed all the boxes in their easy-to-use questionnaire, they’ll suggest a recipe for your dog based upon the information provided by you.

Meal Preparation

Pure Pet Food use air-dried food that requires some effort on the part of the dog owner to prepare.

You’ll be provided with a food scooper and a water scooper in your delivery. Based upon your dog’s custom meal plan, you’ll be required to use your food scooper for your air-dried food and your water scooper to add warm water. Then you’ll need to mix the two together until you’ve got a smooth consistency.

Pure Pet Food recommend in their guidelines included in your shipment to use more water or rehydrate for longer if required in order to find your dog’s preferred consistency.

This isn’t as convenient as the pre-portioned meal pouches that some dog food delivery companies use. Long-time readers of this website will know that I’m a big fan of the hassle-free meal pouches that are as easy as rip-and-serve into your dog’s bowl.

Having said that, the benefit of Pure Pet Food’s method is that your dog food won’t take up a drawer in your freezer. Your dog’s food is contained within a bag and can be stored away in the cupboard.

Price And Delivery

Pure Pet Food offer a premium service to British dog owners so it’ll cost a little more than traditional types of dog food that you’d find at the store.

It would cost me around £61 a month to feed my three-year old 5kg Alaskan Klee Kai. That works out at around £1.70 a day. So for a price of a cup of coffee, I could feed my dog balanced, complete and high quality air-dried dog food customized to their specific needs.

Your Pure Pet Food delivery will arrive at your door around once a month. These convenient and timely deliveries will mean you never need to worry about popping out to the supermarket to get dog food again. This could be a big help given the coronavirus pandemic.

I really liked that Pure Pet Food operate a return service for their bags containing their air-dried dog food. Once you’ve collected five bags, you can send the packaging back to Pure Pet Food to be recycled.

Our Verdict

I was given the opportunity to trial Pure Pet Food on my two Alaskan Klee Kai. I really liked their sign-up questionnaire, which was detailed but not complicated to fill out.

Pure Pet Food achieved a personal feel in their packaging with pamphlets detailing my Klee Kai’s respective meal plans. Their names were on their box and their food. It was a simple but appreciated touch. They also included two tennis balls.

They provided a lot of great information to educate pet owners on the benefits of their human-grade air-dried food. Of the companies I’ve reviewed, I must commend their attention to detail.

I wasn’t sure how my dogs would react to the food. They’re currently eating fresh dog meals from another brand and they’re usually fussy eaters when it comes to dry food.

Pure Pet Food had an advantage given I would be mixing in water with their food. I gave them a small portion as recommended by Pure Pet Food as if I was planning to transition on their air-dried dog food.

My Alaskan Klee Kai loved the food. It took them longer to eat than their normal food but they didn’t lose interest and licked the bowls clean. I did notice my older Klee Kai was struggling with the denseness of the food a little but next time I can add more water to find the right consistency for her.

I would recommend Pure Pet Food but I still prefer the convenience of pre-portioned packaging. While I could see some of the natural ingredients in their food when I was mixing it with water, I personally prefer seeing the meals in pouches.

Having said that, if you’re looking to make the switch to balanced and complete meals using human-grade ingredients, you won’t find a better dry food option that Pure Pet Food.

Pure Pet Food get an average rating of 4.8 stars out of 5 based upon over 1,200 reviews on independent review website Trustpilot (at the time of writing).

Amelia was delighted to see the positive impact on her Border Collie after switching to Pure Pet Food.

My Border Collie is 2 and has always struggled with eating. Having a flare up every couple of weeks, many vets visits after sickness and diarrhoea. She was extremely thin and we were at our wits end…until now! She would go for days refusing to eat whatever we have her and now she’s asking for her food! Her eyes are brighter, coat shines, she’s got tons of energy and tail is always wagging! She’s putting on weight and we haven’t had any flare ups, so so happy.

Caroline was similarly pleased to her dog’s health improve after switching to Pure Pet Food.

We switched to Pure when our dog was diagnosed with an inoperable mass in her nose and the Vets suggested a softer food to the kibble that she was on. After doing lots of research we tried Pure, we have been using it for three months now and really wish we had given Hollie this sooner. Hollie can’t get enough of it she has even started hanging around the food bag an hour or so before she is due her feed. It has so many health benefits in comparison to her previous kibble feed too.

A German Shepherd owner was more than happy to pay for this high quality food.

My German Shepherd really thrives on Pure food. She started on kibble but had very runny poo and this food has sorted her out. She looks shiny and has lists of energy. The delivery system is efficient and customer service excellent. It is expensive but as long as it contains what they claim I think it’s worth it.

Any Negatives?

Pure Pet Food provide premium dog food for pet parents in the UK so it costs more than the traditional brands you’d find at your local supermarket.

Having said that, Pure Pet Food is priced competitively within the dog food delivery market.

Like I mentioned above in my verdict, Pure Pet Food does require a little more effort on your part to prepare your dog’s meals. The pay off is that it’s much more space efficient.

I was really impressed with Pure Pet Food’s air-dried dog food.

My dogs really enjoyed their food, which was an encouraging sign because they have a tendency to be fussy with most dog food brands.

While I still prefer fresh home-cooked style dog meals stored in pre-portioned packaging, Pure Pet Food are a great option for dog owners who want to enjoy the benefits of air-dried food and the convenience of having freezer space.

I would consider Pure Pet Food to be one of the leading dog food delivery companies in the UK. You can check out my updated guide via the link below.
