Every dog owner would love the ability to have peace of mind when leaving their dog at home alone.
The increase in popularity of pet cameras means there an array of options for concerned dog parents to avail of.
Whatever your budget, there should be an option that meets your need, whether you have a dog with separation anxiety or a furry friend that requires lots of stimulation.
Some devices have a treat dispenser to reward your pooch, while others even have laser games so your dog can tire itself out chasing a red dot around the house.
In this article we will take a close look at Nest Cam IQ, what features the device has, what customers are saying about the product – and of course, the price.
So with the introduction over, let’s learn more about the Nest Cam IQ.

What is Nest Cam IQ?
Nest Cam IQ is a state-of-the-art security camera that can tell a person from someone else or something else.
According to their website, the device has a feature called ‘Supersight’, which is a combination of 4K sensor with HD imaging and intelligent imaging.
Nest Cam IQ’s primary function is a security camera, rather than a pet camera. However, given the features, it can be a useful tool for those looking to keep tabs on their dogs.
The product comes with what is described as a “powerful speaker”, while Nest use noise cancellation and echo suppression to provide loud and clear sounds.
With HDR and invisible infrared LEDs, the room will be clearly visible whether it’s pitch black or conditions with poor lighting.
As it plugs into the mains, Nest reassure you that you won’t run out of battery before it sends an alert.
Nest Cam IQ doesn’t come with a treat dispenser, which is hardly a surprise given this device is marketed as a security device rather than a pet camera.
So there will be no treats for your well behaved pooch if you decide to invest in this piece of equipment.
HD video and Two-way speaker
The device is equipped with a 4K sensor, HDR, and intelligent imaging, so dog owners will be able to see their room in a high resolution.
There is the ability to manually pan the room or zoom in on something in particular. The Nest Cam IQ has the ability to automatically zoom in and follow someone or something for you.
This product has a three-way microphone and uses noise suppression so you’ll be able to get clear audio of your dog at home alone.
You’ll be able to speak to your precious pooch if they need some reassurance should they suffer from separation anxiety.
Audio and movement detection
If your Nest Cam IQ detects motion or sound, the device will send a push notification to your smart phone as well as an email with a snapshot of what happened.
So you’ll always have eyes on your dog, no matter what happens. While a lot of security cameras have movement detection, not all of them have sound sensors. Nest Cam IQ get full marks here.
A top of the range security camera wouldn’t be able to fufill its purpose without night vision.
Nest Cam IQ is brilliant in every light, according to their website. With Night Vision led sensors, you’ll receive a high resolution video no matter the time of day (or night).
Ease of use
Nest’s website states that set up should be quick and simple. Once you’ve plugged the device into an electrical outlet, you download their app and it will take you through the steps required to get it running.
Design and size
Their website is clearly proud of the design with one image showing the following statement: “P.S It’s beautiful”
Compared to other security cameras on the market, Nest Cam IQ is quit sleek and modern.
With a sturdy base to keep it balanced, the camera is small so it won’t be an eyesore in the living room or bedroom.
Nest Cam IQ is one of the premium security cameras available on the market at the moment. It is priced at $299 (USD) / £299 (GBP) / €230,90 (Eur) on Amazon.
What people are saying about it
The device has 4.8 out of 5 stars based upon 138 reviews on Nest’s website.
One customer revealed that the device worked well as a pet camera:
“Great video quality. We set it up to monitor our pets while we were on vacation. Worked fantastic and we were able to “talk” to our pets from England. Would recommend.”
Another Nest consumer was pleased with the camera’s performance when monitoring her dogs:
“I use Nest indoor IQ primarily for monitoring my pets in the utility room while I’m at work it’s mostly dark so I don’t get anything but a night vision picture however it’s very clear and I can see how my pets are doing well while I’m at work. They are able to come in and out through doggie door from the yard which has visible fence.”
While one other customer felt the camera didn’t represent value for money:
“The product is good and reliable but I feel the interface is poor and the customer service is awkward. The signing up for monitoring is messy and the charge for monitoring on a purchase is confusing. It should be seamless. Click on a camera properties and see what monitoring you have and when it expires. It’s expensive so it should be excellent.”
Nest Cam IQ doesn’t come with a treat dispenser or a laser game to keep your four-legged friend entertained.
Having said that, the device’s primary function is to act as a security camera.
For the price, you could purchase a dog camera that has a lot more dog friendly features.
Is this the best dog camera?
While the Nest Cam IQ is an excellent security camera, it falls short as a dog camera.
Given the investment required for this product, you would be better served purchasing a device that been specifically designed to monitor dogs.

Anything else to consider?
With an additional Nest Aware subscription (sold separately) you can continuously record everything that’s happening. This means customers will have 24/7 footage rather than brief clips.
However, given the initial investment of purchasing this premium product, some dog owners might be understandably reluctant to pay more money for a subscription.
The Nest Cam IQ is clearly a very good product but helloBARK! believes it falls short as a device to monitor dogs.
