What is the iRobot Roomba 960 vacuum?
The iRobot Roomba 960 vacuum is a wifi-connected device that delivers multi-room coverage.
Their website proudly declares that this model has five time the air power compared to the Roomba 600 series.
iRobot Roomba 960 knows where it’s been in your home and what’s left to clean before the job is done.
With two rubber brushes, you get double the cleaning action throughout your home.
Like the other Roomba robot vacuums that we’ve reviewed, you can control the 960 using your iRobot Home App.
So cleaning your home is literally at your fingertips – and you won’t even have to get your hands dirty.
The iRobot Roomba 960 vacuum has a design that most people will be familiar with if you’ve encountered this brand before.
The Roomba 960 measures 13.8-by-3.6 inches and weighs 8.5 pounds
It’s a circular device with three wheels – two wheels are for traction and the third wheel is for stability.
The clean button is clearly located just off centre next to the home and spot cleaning button.
Other notable design features include a camera the front for navigation and a dust bin at the back.
There are two rollers on the bottom side of the device that lift and loosen tiny particles.
The iRobot Roomba 960 vacuum has iRobot’s patented AeroForce 3-stage Cleaning System that uses tangle-free Multi-Surface Brushes and Power-Lifting suction with five times the air power.
For dog owners like myself, this is a key feature as it’ll help the Roomba 960 tackle embedded dirt, debris and pet hair that dogs have left behind in your home.
The Dirt Detect sensors will also recognise areas where there’s a lot of dirt in what iRobot call “high traffic zones” in your home.
The product has iAdapt Navigation with visual localization which helps iRobot to seamlessly and efficiently navigate your home and keep track of its location.
You won’t have to worry about getting your hands dirty to untangle pet hair wrapped around the brush as the Roomba 960 has a tangle-free multi-surface Rubber Brushes designed to handle dog hair.
The high-efficiency filter “captures 99 per cent” of all allergens, including pollen, that are as small as 10 microns.
Ease of Use
Using the Roomba couldn’t be easier. You can clean or schedule a clean anytime using the iRobot Home App.
You’ll also be able to access Clean Map reports so you know where your Roomba has cleaned.
The app will work anywhere – so whether you’re at the office, out for dinner or at the cinema, you can schedule a clean.
The Roomba 960 has a run time of up to 75 minutes before it automatically recharges and resumes cleaning.
If you don’t want the hassle of having to regularly empty your iRobot device, you can invest in the Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal.
This removes yet another hassle from your day to day chores.
The iRobot Roomba 960 vacuum has an average of 4.5 stars out of 5 based upon over 2,200 reviews on the company’s website. iRobot add that 93 per cent of the respondents would recommend this product to a friend.
The Roomba 960 has a slightly lower average of 4.1 stars based upon 1,921 reviews on online seller Amazon.
One customer with two pets couldn’t speak highly enough of the product:
I cannot live without this. I have a messy (normal) 3 year old and 2 massive dogs, one being a great pyrenees that can never be brushed enough. Even with grooming, you get a snowball of hair in your hand when you pet her. And she sleeps all over the place leaving a white trail of hair.
Another testimonial read that the customer was satisfied with Roomba’s performance:
This Roomba has been a time saver and has helped with the pet fur, hair, and sand. I cannot Express how much this has helped. I now only “deep clean vacuum” once a week. The Roomba is set on a schedule to vacuum twice a day. It keeps the pet hair and sand under control.
Finally, one Amazon user revealed that the Roomba 960 cleaned her carpet better than the upright vacuum she previously used:
It cleaned the carpet better than my upright vacuum, which isn’t a dyson but isn’t a piece of junk either. I have it run everyday and nothing is better than coming home to a clean house. If you have a pet like I do this is really what you need so you don’t have hair everywhere. It cleaned the carpet better than my upright vacuum, which isn’t a dyson but isn’t a piece of junk either. The iRobot Roomba 960 vacuum is priced at $649.99 on iRobot’s website.
The Roomba 960 is a good product but there are newer and more advanced iRobot models on the market.
If you’re going to invest significant money in a robot vacuum cleaner, you may want to purchase their latest model.
However, if you’ve got a tight budget, this device is half the price of the more advanced robot vacuums.
Is this the best pet vacuum cleaner?
iRobot Roomba 960 is a solid vacuum cleaner that will do a good job in homes with pets.
However, as we mentioned above, there are newer iRobot models that we rate a little more highly than the 960.

Anything else to consider?
The 960 has five times the air power for improved pick-up performance compared to the Roomba 600 and 700 series as opposed to the newer models.
You can still use the iRobot Roomba 960 without the app. However, the app is designed to make your life easier to ensure you have the best possible experience with the Roomba 960.
Wrapping up – our final thoughts
There is a lot to like about the iRobot Roomba 960.
According to most of the reviews that we encountered, it’s well equipped to handle pet hair.
It’s half the price of the s9+ and s7+ series so it might be a better fit for some pet owners’ budgets.
However, if you’re going to invest considerable money in a robot vacuum, you might want to invest in the latest models available to buy on iRobot.
