What is Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum?
Dyson start by making a bold claim about their Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum cleaner on their website.
They proudly state that this model has the strongest suction of any other upright vacuums on the market.
Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum seal in suction across all floors to pick up microscopic dust and allergens.
Their website cites Vacuum Cleaner Advisor who describe this particular model as “a beast”.
Little wonder then that it’s number one for customer satisfaction with upright and stick vacuums.
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum can do no wrong judging by Dyson’s website – but let’s look at the product in a closer detail.
At first look, the Dyson Ball Animal 2 cleaner doesn’t look lightweight and nimble. Compared to their stick models, this vacuum has a cumbersome appearance.
The Ball element of the hoover is immediately noticeable as well as the waste bin. It has 1.8l capacity which is a positive if you’ve got a high shedding dog.
On top of the bin are the cyclones which provide Dyson’s trademark power.
The purple hose at the top of the vacuum matches the purple detailing in the ball and some of the buttons. Otherwise the Dyson Ball Animal 2 has a silver color with splashes of purple in the head and ball.
Although this may be on the large size for a vacuum, the good news is three of the four tools that come with the Animal 2 can be stored on the main body of the machine.
Having previously reviewed Dyson’s stick vacuums, we feel the Dyson Ball Animal 2 is lacking in some of streamline design that was present in other models.
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum uses what is called Advanced Radial Root Cyclone Technology. Basically, the composition of the cyclones allows the machine to maximise suction and capture microscopic dust.
One of the standout features is the Ball technology. Their website explains that the glass-reinforced polypropylene ball protects the motor and over 100 key components which are layered inside.
The Ball technology serves another function – too. With compressed airways and low centre of gravity, the Dyson Ball Animal 2 will have increased stability and maneuverability.
Like the other stick and upright Dyson vacuums we’ve reviewed, this particular model comes with a motorized brush bar to dig up dirt in your carpet to provide a thorough clean.
The Animal 2 has the ability to automatically adjust to different floor types.
Ease of Use
As we mentioned above, the Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum isn’t lightweight. It’s quite a heavy machine, weighing over 7.5 kilos (17 pounds).
It could feel quite cumbersome to move around your home but it should feel balanced and sturdy given to Ball Technology.
We really like cordless vacuums for ease of use but the Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum has a cord length of 35ft giving it a maximum reach of 50ft.
Dyson provide a combination tool, stair tool and tangle-free turbine tool as well as the motorised head.
The tangle-free turbine tool will make life easier – the counter-rotating brush heads remove hair from the carpets and upholstery so dog hair won’t get wrapped around the head.
Emptying the bin is simple thanks to their one-click technology. With no tangles and a simple point-and-shoot system, you won’t have to get your hands dirty.
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum has an average of 4.4 out of 5 based upon 454 reviews on their website. There are even more reviews on online retailer Amazon. Over 1,100 people have given testimonials resulting in an average rating of 4 stars.
One customer described the vacuum as a must have for all pet owners:
I used the “Tangle Free Turbine Tool” to clean the chair the cats sleep on. One swipe across with the turbine tool and all the hair was gone! When I saw that this vacuum automatically adjusts to the height of the floor, be it wood or carpet; I thought “yeah but you’d never use this on wood as it would just blow all the pet hair around”. Not true at all! The air exhaust for the vacuum is no where near the base of the vacuum and I had no issue vacuuming up cat hairs on wood floor.
Similarly, another Amazon reviewer says everyone needs the Dyson Ball Animal 2 in their life:
I have been running my vac every single day and I am just shocked at the amount of crud and dirt, and hair, etc that this thing pulls up! On another note, since using this my sons asthma has been much better, not as much coughing, etc.
One complaint that popped up is the mobility of the vacuum on carpets given it’s size and suction power. This customer said:
Dyson picked up more dirt and pet hair than was visible to the naked eye… However, on the shag carpet, I could not for the life of me push the Dyson forward with the brush roller going.
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 is priced at $499.99 on Dyson’s website.
Dyson customer can avail of a 30-day money back guarantee with free shipping on returns through their website.
There’s no question that the Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum has impressive power and suction. However, we spotted a substantial number of reviews that suggested the vacuum was difficult to move on carpets due to the suction.
The Animal 2 model isn’t cordless, which is something we value.
However, if you’ve got the budget and want a vacuum that should be more than adept and cleaning carpet and upholstery covered in pet hair, the Dyson ball Animal 2 could be the model for you.
Is this the best pet vacuum cleaner?
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum has a lot of pros: we love the tangle free attachment which makes live easier for pet parents who have cats or dogs who like to sleep on furniture.
However, we feel there are easier to use Dyson models – and other pet vacuums – than the Dyson Ball Animal 2 cleaner.

Anything else to consider?
Designed with pet parents in mind, the Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum is certified asthma and allergy friendly.
Whole-machine HEPA filtration ensures that allergens are trapped inside the machine, not expelled back into the home.
This is great feature for those with allergy problems.
Dyson use a washable lifetime filter so there’s no extra cost. You can just wash and reuse the filter.
Wrapping up – our final thoughts
We’ve come to the end of our review of the Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuum.
This sturdy cleaner gets rave reviews on Amazon and Dyson’s website for it’s ability to clean dirt and pet hair that’s invisible to the naked eye.
If you’re tearing your own hair out at the constant trail of pet fur around the home, this could well be the right vacuum cleaner for you.
However, if you’re looking for a lightweight and streamlined vacuum that allows for a quick and easy clean, we prefer the stick products.
