Who are Butternut Box

Butternut Box are a British dog food delivery company who are helping to modernise the way we feed our four-legged friends throughout the UK.

They work alongside vet nutritionists to create meals that contain the perfect amount of top-notch ingredients to provide a balanced and complete diet to our furry friends.

Butternut Box customise their meals to meet your dog’s specific needs, whether you’ve got a pup who needs to put on weight or a senior dog on a diet.

They’ve got four delicious recipes that contain 60% meat and 40% vegetables. There are no waste products, mystery fillers or preservatives that you find in traditional brands. It’s no wonder that even fussy eaters will gobble down their meals without hesitation given the quality of the food.

I speak from experience having seen how my picky Alaskan Klee Kai are obsessed with Butternut Box’s meals to my delight. When we fed them dry food, it was a constant battle to keep them interested. With Butternut Box, they’re sat by their bowls waiting for their food and lick each other’s bowls when they’re finished their meals.

Butternut Box use pre-portioned pouches so there’s minimal fuss at mealtime. It’s as simple as rip and serve directly into your dog’s bowl. You won’t have to worry about overfeeding your canine.

How can they help during COVID-19?

Butternut Box can help concerned pet parents because they deliver your dog’s meals directly to your doorstep. You won’t have to leave your house to feed your pet quality meals.

They require dog owners to fill out a simple questionnaire to provide key information such as age, breed, body type, activity level, allergies and whether they’ve got a history of being a picky eater.

Once the details are entered, they’ll come up with a plan for your dog that ensures they get all the daily nutrients to keep them active and happy.

Butternut Box’s meals are stored in pre-portioned pouches and delivered direct to your door. In doing so, that’s one thing ticked off your shopping list that you won’t have to worry about.

They pouches are easier to store in the freezer than big bags of dog food or containers of dog meals. Freezer space is at a premium at the best of times but even more so during COVID-19.

They’re flexible with delivery dates and subscribers can log into their account and make a change where necessary. You can also pause the meals if you need to do so in the case of an emergency.

Although their meals are more expensive than traditional dog food you’d buy at the supermarket, we found Butternut Box to be one of the best value dog food delivery companies in the current UK market.

Our verdict

We consider Butternut Box to the best all round value dog food delivery service in the UK at the moment.

They’ve got a great selection of four recipes – chicken, beef, lamb and turkey – to keep even fussy eaters like my Alaskan Klee Kai motivated at mealtime.

Not only that, but we love that their meals come in pre-portioned pouches. This takes away any faffing around at dinnertime. These pouches are also easier to store in the freezer than big bags or pots of frozen dog food. We’ve got a small freezer so this was an important factor.

They were worth the investment given my dogs are no long showing signs of stomach problems. That means no trips to the vet! You don’t want to be putting yourself or nurses and vets at risk during these unprecedented times.

To give you an idea of the cost, feeding my dogs Butternut Box costs £58 a month.

Just started my 9 year old German Shepherd on this food and after 2 weeks so far so good, she seems to really enjoy it. She is as picky eater and always cleans this up. The deliveries are great and arrives in great condition. Very pleased so far.

Our verdict

My dogs loved Different Dog, especially the variety of recipes they’ve got to offer. There’s something for every dog! Their meals are clearly made to a very high standard and look fit for human consumption.

We found serving our dogs was easy but we preferred the convenience of pre-portioned pouches rather than Different Dog’s pots as we still had to fuss with utensils at mealtime.

We also had difficult fitting all the pots in our freezer given their size and shape. If space wasn’t a problem, it would have been fine but we found we were sacrificing two thirds of our freezer which wasn’t ideal given the coronavirus outbreak.

Different Dog provide a premium service with premium meals. There’s no doubt they’ve got human-grade quality dog food but it is quite expensive. Depending on your budget or employment status, this may or may not be an issue.

To give you a rough idea of price, to feed my two Alaskan Klee Kai, I would have to pay £105.68 a month.

What are other customers sayings

Different Dog get great reviews on Trustpilot with 4.8 stars out of 5.

One customer was pleased with Different Dog’s eco-friendly approach.

The 8 week pack of frozen food arrived on time. The dog food looks as if you could eat it yourself and you know what is in the tub. Meg very fussy and would not eat veg. She is eating up the meals. I like the tubs which are compostible and good for the environment.

A pet parent with sensitive pups was delighted with the meals:

I struggle to find ready made food that my dog can have (multiple allergies) and enjoy eating. Different Dog have a least two products I can choose from – and the quality is excellent. Definitely a paws up from both my dogs.

My dogs loved their meals but we did struggle with the logistics of storing all their meals in the freezer even though we were only receiving fortnightly deliveries.

Our verdict

My dogs liked Tails.com but it wasn’t a resounding success like with Butternut Box and Different Dog.

They’ve always been picky with dry food and it was no different with Tails.com. They ate the meals but it was at a much slower pace as they adopted a grazing approach.

For that reasons, I prefer the home-cooked element because I love that my dogs are getting healthy and fresh meals that I can see with my own eyes is created using top ingredients.
