Things To Consider When Buying A Dog Crate For Great Danes

Great Danes are one of the largest and most powerful dog breeds in the world. You’ll need to invest in a heavy duty, premium dog crate capable of keeping your four-legged friend safe and sound.
There are a number of factors that Great Dane owners will want to consider when researching the best dog crate for Great Danes to ensure your dog is happy and safe in their “den”.
• Size Matters – When searching for your Great Dane’s dog crate, the most crucial aspect to consider is the size of the dog crate. Great Danes are one of the largest dog breeds, so a standard-sized crate won’t cut it. You want to look for extra large dog crates or those specifically designed for giant breeds like the Great Dane. A properly sized crate ensures your dog has enough space to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.
• Durability and Strength – Great Danes are powerful dogs so you’ll need a heavy duty dog crate. Their crate needs to be able to withstand their strength and weight. We recommend searching for heavy duty dog crates that are constructed from sturdy materials like reinforced steel or plastics. These crates offer durability and security, ensuring your Great Dane remains safe while inside.
• Escape-Proof Design – I’ve got two escape artists and Great Danes are clever and strong – too. They may try to escape from their crate if they feel anxious or uncomfortable. Invest in a crate with an “escape-proof” design, featuring secure locks and latches that can withstand the force of a determined Great Dane.
• Ventilation for Comfort – Some Great Danes can be sensitive to temperature, with their thick coat resulting in overheating. It’s a good idea to choose a crate that provides adequate “ventilation” to keep your Great Dane comfortable. This is really important in warm climates or during the summer.
• Portability and Storage – While Great Danes are not as portable as smaller dogs, it’s still essential to consider the portability of the crate. Great Dane owners like to have adventures with their giant friend just as much as small dog owners. We kept this in mind and opted to highlight crates with wheels or handles for easy moving. We also included crates that can be easily folded and stored when not in use.
• Easy to Clean: Just like most dog breeds, Great Danes shed and can be messy. My dog gets car sick if we drive for long periods so I like to use a crate with a “removable and washable” tray or floor to simplify cleaning. A clean environment is not only more pleasant for your dog but also helps prevent health issues.
• Budget And Price – Great Danes are big dogs so you’ll need a big crate which usually means a big price. There’s no escaping the fact that buying a dog crate for a Great Dane is expensive. However, we’ve highlighted extra large dog crates for Great Danes that are built using quality materials and should last the lifetime of your Great Dane. There are options available to suit various budgets. Compare prices and features to find the best value for your money.
Best Extra Large Dog Crates For Great Danes 2023
Now that we’ve looked at what you need to weigh up before you make your purchase and some of the factors we considered before creating our list, here’s the best extra large dog crates for Great Danes.
1) Impact’s Collapsible Dog Crate

If you like to travel with your Great Dane and you are searching for a crate that offers enhanced portability, you may want to consider Impact’s Collapsible crate. It can be collapsed in less than 60 seconds (I put this to the test and it’s true). So you can break it down if you want to take the crate on the road to use in an AirBnB or hotel or you need to use it in the car. While it doesn’t haver some of the features of the High Anxiety crate, it’s still a quality option for Great Dane owners. It’s more lightweight so it’s perfect for everyday use and ideal for Great Danes who have a more relaxed personality. The Collapsible crate has military grade handles to make it comfortable to carry. The crate has diamond-shaped holes to provide plenty of ventilation for your Great Dane. Impact recommend the 54″ model for Great Danes which starts at $4999 – but you can save $750 by using our discount below.
Now, you’re probably wondering why is the Collapsible crate so much more expensive than the High Anxiety crate. I got in contact with Impact’s customer service team and this is what they said:
This is due to the physical size of the 54″. it is much harder to build and it requires twice the labor to build it from start to finish. Due to the additional labor and time it takes to produce we have the additional charges.

2) Impact’s Stationary Dog Crate

I wanted to include Impact’s Stationary dog crate as another option for Great Dane owners. It’s a heavy duty option like the High Impact crate. Impact write on their website that it’s another great option for Great Dane owners who want to ensure secure transportation of their Great Dane – whether that’s in the car, train or plane (you can see some photos of the crate in use at airports and being loaded onto planes in the review section of the product page). While it’s a heavy duty crate, it’s still sufficiently lightweight to make it portable. How does it differ from the High Anxiety model? Well, the Stationary crate uses a slam latch rather than a paddle latch, doesn’t use the thicker aluminum and isn’t a welded structure. However, it does have slightly larger ventilation holes! The Stationary crate has stellar reviews and carries a price tag of $2999 for the 48″ crater recommended for Great Danes.

3) Impact’s High Anxiety Dog Crate

Great Danes are powerful dogs capable of a lot of damage due to their sheer size and strength. If you’ve got a Great Dane with destructive tendencies or a mischievous nature, you may want an escape-proof dog crate for your huge pet. Impact’s High Anxiety dog crate is considered one of the best escape-proof crates on the market. It’s constructed with 62% thicker aluminum alloy, uses a zinc-plated steel latch and has four additional butterfly latches for additional security. While your Great Dane won’t be able to escape, they should feel comfortable as Impact have designed the High Anxiety crate to promote a den-like feel. With rounded holes to prevent your Great Dane from sinking their teeth in, they won’t do damage to themselves either. The High Anxiety has incredible reviews (including from Great Dane owners) with an average score of 4.9 based upon 2,000 reviews. Impact’s largest High Anxiety crate is 48″ and the price starts at $1699. However, it comes with a Dog Damage Guarantee so if your dog causes damage to the crate, they’ll replace it. They only offer this coverage on their High Anxiety Crate. I ranked it at number three because this is the only Impact crate in this article that doesn’t specifically cater to Great Danes so be sure to carefully measure your Great Dane before purchasing!

4) Revol Dog Crate By Diggs
Where To Buy: diggs.pet

Diggs Revol Crate (Photo: Diggs)
If you’re looking for a quality dog crate at a more affordable price, you may want to consider the Revol. This is a hugely popular dog crate manufactured by Diggs. If you’re a dog owner with a social media presence, you’ve probably seen some buzz around the Revol. It’s been inspired by baby industry standards and incorporates an ergonomic design. I found it really easy to collapse and put back together (it takes less than 60 seconds like Impact’s Collaspible crate but offers a smoother process). It has a wire mesh design so it doesn’t have the same compact, den-like feel of Impact’s crates. The Revol is easy to move around the home or take on the road thanks to the handle and the wheels. It has a diamond-shaped mesh design that Diggs explain will prevent your Great Dane from getting their snout through or sticking their paws through. The Revol is a premium dog crate with a premium price tag but comes in cheaper than Impact’s models. Having said that, I feel it lacks the versatility and supreme construction of Impact’s crates hence why I placed it third in the list. The large Revol is priced at $675.

5) SMONTER Dog Crate
Where To Buy: amazon.com

I wanted to include a budget option, although I personally opted for Impact and Diggs. SMONTER Dog Crate. They’ve got a heavy duty 48 inch crate that could potentially be suitable for Great Danes. It has three entrances, which offers some nice versatility for Great Dane owners who require various access points. However, it doesn’t have the same aesthetic or design features of the other crates mentioned in this article. Having said that, the SMONTER does have wheels so you can move it around the home. It is priced at $319 (available on Amazon) , meaning it’s the most affordable option in this feature.
Anything Else To Consider?

It’s a good idea to crate train your Great Dane from a young age.
As a dog owner, I consider crate training to be an essential tool for dog owners whether you’ve got a Great Dane puppy or adult Great Dane.
To make the crate a positive and welcoming space, associate it with positive experiences like treats and praise.
Gradually increase the time your dog spends inside the crate, ensuring they associate it with comfort and security.
We’re not dog behaviorists or dog trainers, so we recommend speaking to a professional to learn more on the topic of crate training your Great Dane.
Wrapping Up

So we’ve reached the end of our article on the best extra large dog crates for Great Danes.
If I was to pick a dog crate for a Great Dane, I’d go with one of the Impact crates thanks to the cleverness of their design, enhanced safety features and sheer versatility.
Whether you want to go for the Collapsible, High Impact or Stationary crates depends on your personal preference and what is most suitable for your Great Dane.
If you travel a lot with your Great Dane, you may want to go for the Collapsible crate that can be collapsed in 60 seconds or the Stationary crate that is more from heavy duty materials.
These options have specific crates tailored to Great Danes (as advertised on their website).
However, Great Dane owners who want an escape-proof crate with reinforced metal or who have Great Danes with destructive tendencies may prefer the High Anxiety crate. Just be careful to measure your dog to make sure they’ve got sufficient space.
Having said all that, Diggs offer a great alternative that’s the easiest to collapse of all the crates in this feature. I don’t think you’ll go wrong with any of the crates in this feature.
