Trying to find a dog camera that is right for your specific needs can be an overwhelming experience.

There are a wide range of options available on the market right now, so pet parents are spoilt for choice.

Some of the top models have a lot of different features to help us keep our furry friend entertained when left at home alone.

Others are more limited with a basic camera and two-way audio to do a no frills job.

In this article, helloBARK! will take a close look at Arlo Smart Home Camera, what customers are saying about the product and whether our readers should consider investing in this product.

So let’s get down to business and start our review of the device.

What is Arlo Smart Home Camera?

Arlo Smart Home Camera’s primary function is to act as a security system for home owners.

However, it can double up as a pet camera given it has a HD camera and two-way microphone.

Arlo claim that the quality of their camera will provide dog owners with a crystal clear picture.

The device is waterproof so pet parents could place the Arlo Smart Home Camera outside in the garden or yard.

You don’t need any wires to get the camera up and running to avoid clutter in the home and potential hazards for dogs.

Customers can access the camera by downloading the device’s app or logging in on their computer.

Treat dispenser

Given the primary function of the camera is to provide home security, it’s little surprise that it doesn’t have a treat dispenser.

While a treat dispenser isn’t a vital feature for a dog camera, it can help to provide your pup with some stimulation and prevent boredom at home alone.

HD camera and two-way speaker

The HD camera streams video in 720p to provide pet parents with a clear visual of their four-legged friends.

Not only that but Arlo Home Security Camera comes with two-way audio, which means you can talk to your dog and hear any sounds that your precious pooch is making.

This is a vital feature because you want to be able to hear if your dog is barking, crying, howling or whining. If they can hear your voice, it could help to soothe any anxiety.

Audio and movement detection

The ability to detect movement and sound is something that we value at helloBARK! but this camera doesn’t have an audio sensor.

While this is disappointing, you’ll still receive a push notification if the camera senses movement. So if your dog is moving around a lot, you’ll be able to log into the app and issue some instructions.

Night vision

With the Arlo Home Security Camera, you’ll have the ability to see everything even in darkness. The device uses a lens that can illuminate up to 25 feet so you can have peace of mind that night vision will allow you to check up on your pup irrespective of the time of day.

Ease of use

The Arlo Home Security Camera does appear pretty easy to set up, judging upon its reviews on Amazon.

While there does appear to be some reoccurring issues with the device, setting it up is not one.

Design and size

It’s design is nothing special: it looks like a security camera. It isn’t as compact as other models reviewed, while it doesn’t possess a contemporary appearance.

However, it’s quite small with dimensions of 21.6 x 5.7 x 16.5 cm.

Arlo Home Security Camera isn’t quite as expensive as some dedicated pet cameras on the market. However, it’s still a significant investment at $159.99 (USD) on Amazon, especially given the price of some other security cameras.

What people are saying about it

The device has an average rating of 3.6 out of five stars based upon nearly 1,500 reviews on Amazon.

An Amazon consumer was pleased with the camera after purchasing the device to keep an eye on her pets:

“The camera was very easy to setup, and the picture quality is very impressive. Very happy with the product, which appears to be of a high build quality. We will certainly recommend this camera to friends – and it works well for us as a ‘dog cam’ when we out of the house and want to see what mischief the dogs are up to.”

One customer gave the product four stars but felt the sound could be better:

“I wanted to add the ARLO Q to my system to give me a mains powered camera with sound so I can keep better watch on my dog. The image quality at 1080p is brilliant and the night vision works great. The sound is above average which is acceptable for such a small speaker and mic.”

However, one person felt that the camera was too sensitive:

“The Arlo app is hopeless, sending you an email and notification every time motion is detected. You can arm and disarm the system but forgetting to disarm will result in hundreds of emails and notifications every time the dog runs past a camera!”

Any negatives?

The Arlo Home Security Camera is lacking some features that helloBARK! believes are key features for a top of the range pet cam.

The lack of a treat dispenser is disappointing, as this can be a useful tool for dog owners.

Some dog cameras even come with games to keep those exceptionally bright dogs stimulated.

Is this the best dog camera?

As you’ve probably guessed already, we don’t consider the Arlo Home Security System to be one of the best dog cameras available at the moment.

It’s missing a number of features that we like to see.

Anything else to consider?

The Arlo Home Security Camera is weatherproof so it will function whether it’s in hot or cold temperatures or in rain or snow.

It comes with a wall mount to give you the ability to place it in a permanent location – inside the home or outside in the garden.

They suggest an optimum height of 7 feet above the floor, aimed slightly down. The better area for motion detection is 5 feet to 20 feet (1.5 to 6 metres) from camera position.

This product also works with Amazon Alexa, Echo Show, FireTV and Arlo smart home security lights.

If you’re looking to invest in a dog camera, you’ll want a device that has an array of different functions to deal with a number of different situations you may be presented with as a pet owner.

The Arlo Home Security Camera is a decent option but comes at a premium price. helloBARK! believes you can find better value for money if you’re in the market for a dog cam.
