A Pup Above are one of the more experienced pet food suppliers having launched their business nearly six years ago.

Initially called The Grocery Pup, they rebranded to A Pup Above in 2020 and became popular for their sous-vide frozen meals proving extremely popular.

A Pup Above explain on their website that they started creating dog food to make it easier to know what’s going into your dog’s bowl.

So they wanted to create balanced and complete recipes containing human-grade ingredients that you’ll recognise – and leave out artificial additives and nasties sometimes found in regular dog food.

A Pup Above add that they wanted to create healthy dog food in a sustainable way to ensure their dog food is better for dogs, humans and the planet.

In this review, we’ll be taking a deep dive into A Pup Above’s Whole Food Cubies but you can read our review of their sous-vide frozen meals here.

So if you’re familiar with A Pup Above’s frozen sous-vide patties, their Whole Food Cubies are the patties in a dry food format to cater to those with limited freezer space.

The Whole Food Cubies are still made using A Pup Above’s trademark gently cooked sous-vide method – so your dog can still enjoy the benefits of the frozen meals.

A Pup Above dice the food into cubies before their slowly air dried to lock in maximum flavour and all the nutritional goodness in the recipes.

This pet food brand stress that they choose each ingredient in your dog’s recipes with purpose – and their website will give a detailed explanation to why each ingredient was chosen (a great detail).

You can feel good that your dog is eating human grade ingredients, including non-GMO veggies, superfoods such as flaxseed, thyme and parsley and salmon oil to promote healthy skin and coat.

Ultimately this comes down to personal preference.

Our Verdict

I typically feed frozen meals to my dogs that come from a dog food delivery company.

However, I was intrigued to try Whole Food Cubies because I do like the convenience of feeding dry food as it doesn’t require fridge or freezer space.

My dogs are hit and miss with dry food so I wasn’t sure what there reaction would be like.

But to my surprise, they devoured the Whole Food Cubies without a moment’s pause. I fed Whole Food Cubies to my dogs for the best part of three weeks without any fussiness.

This was a big plus because my female dog is a picky eater and regularly turns her nose up at her food due to boredom with it. Whole Food Cubies passed her tough test!

From a dog owner’s perspective, I really liked feeding dry food which involves less fuss and mess than frozen meals.

I could clearly see some of the whole food ingredients in the cubies which made me feel good that my dogs were eating human grade dog food.

A Pup Above’s sustainable approach made me feel good about feeding their food to my dogs but doing my bit for the planet – too.

My only criticism would be the lack of personalization or customization – it would have been a nice touch to have a customized scooper to ensure the portions were right.

What Other Customers Are Saying?

A Pup Above have a customer review section on their website where some customers have provided their feedback on Whole Food Cubies.

A Pup Above customer gave the Whole Food Cubies a glowing five-star review.

Sprinkle will eat pretty much anything I put in front of her, but Sprout is a picky girl. She gets tired of the same tastes and textures over and over so I sprinkle a few Cubies on top of her food and she gobbled it up! They are perfect for high value training treats as well!

Another pet parent shared that she switched from one brand to A Pup Above with great results.

Our little pup Tortellini always seemed indifferent to Farmer’s Dog. I had a thought it may be because she has a trait some small dogs have, which is wanting to take food from the dish and eat it a foot or so away. Impossible to do with the wet foods, and it seemed like she was starving herself until the switch. Now she eats at her pace happily!

However, one customer revealed her picky pup didn’t stick with the meals.

I was really hoping this would be the food that would overcome his finicky ways. But alas it is not. He ate the sample like it was going out of style. By day 4 of trying the different flavors he was over it. I’m sure many dogs will love this, just not mine.
