These gorgeous little pups are a relatively new breed that you may not know a lot about after an American woman named Linda Spurlin created the Alaskan Klee Kai in Alaska in the 1970s.

If you’re interested in getting an Alaskan Husky or Siberian Husky but are worried about accommodating such a large dog in an urban area, you may want to consider an Alaskan Klee Kai.

Displaying some of the physical characteristics of the sled dog breeds, the Alaskan Klee Kai were bred to be companion animals rather than working dogs like their ancestors.

AKK, often dubbed Mini Huskies, can come in a variety of sizes, coat colors and eye colors, which naturally can affect the price of an Alaskan Klee Kai pup greatly.

Where do Alaskan Klee Kai come from?

Alaskan Klee Kai were created by an Alaskan woman named Linda Spurlin. She started to breed these dogs in the 1970s after an encounter with a miniature-sized Husky called Curious in Colorado. Spurlin brought Curious back to Alaska and was struck by the interest in her dog. As a result, she embarked on a quest to breed more of these “curiosities”.

By the late 1980s, she was getting significant interest in her dogs and finally decided to make them available to the public. The Alaskan Klee Kai is recognized by the United Kennel Club and American Rare Breed Association.

Alaskan Klee Kai are often described as Mini Huskies. It’s an apt description given Spurlin used Alaskan Husky to lay down the foundation of her upcoming AKK breed. A big admirer of these dogs, the Klee Kai display some of the traits of these sled dogs. For example, they’re extremely vocal.

Spurlin added what she describes as a “small dose” of Siberian Husky. This could be evident in the striking face masks that Alaskan Klee Kai, much like the Siberian Husky. To reduce the size of her Klee Kai, Spurlin used smaller breeds such as the American Eskimo Dog and a black Belgian breed called Schipperke.

Alaskan Klee Kai come in three different sizes: standard, miniature and toy. The Alaskan Klee Kai size can affect the price, with toy AKK sometimes more expensive than the bigger varieties.

The standard version reach heights of between 15 inches and up to 17 inches. They can weigh up to 20 pounds.

The miniature Alaskan Klee Kai are usually between 13 and 15 inches tall. Their weight ranges from 14 to 20 pounds.

Toy Alaskan Klee Kai don’t exceed a height of 13 inches, while they can weigh as little as 10 pounds (sometimes even less).

Alaskan Klee Kai come in three main colors: black and white, grey and white, and red and white. The color of Alaskan Klee Kai can have an impact on the price. Generally, red and white and white are less common so will cost a little more.

Black and white AKK are either jet black/stark black and white or dilute black/salt and and white. Grey and white Alaskan Klee Kai are either dark/wolf grey and white or light/silver and white. Alaskan Klee Kai that are red and white can come in dark red and white or a cinnamon red and white. Finally, you can also get a white Alaskan Klee Kai, although they’re rarer.

We believe it’s good practice to ask to see the puppy interact along with it’s mother to make sure she’s happy and healthy and is being mistreated by overbreeding.

Alaskan Klee Kai can vary in price depending on size, coat color, eye color and each individual breeder.

However, you should be suspicious if a breeder is offering to sell an Alaskan Klee Kai puppy for less than $1500.

Indeed, the usual price range for Alaskan Klee Kai tends to be between $1800 and $3000 depending on the factors listed above.

In our experience, the Alaskan Klee Kai breeder charged more based upon the color of the puppy’s eyes – blue eyes were the most expensive.

The price of Alaskan Klee Kai is also a direct result of breeders carrying out health tests and participating in the UKC confirmation to improve breeding stock.

Alaskan Klee Kai won’t be a good fit for every home. Even if you like the appearance of a breed, you need to do proper research to see if they’re a good fit for your lifestyle.

AKK are companion dogs so they don’t like to be left alone for long periods at a time. They do tend to suffer from separation anxiety, so they like to have company.

These little dogs don’t always have great recall and some breeders advise to keep them on a leash at all times. They’re expert escape artists so you’ll need to make sure your property is appropriately fenced and secured.
