Pomeranians are fluffy dogs that originate from the northern region of Poland and Germany.
They’re often referred to as Spitz dogs, which is a nod to their pointed muzzles.
Pomeranians are a popular breed given they’re apartment-sized dogs with big personalities.
We recommend contacting your local rescue shelter to see if there’s a Pom that needs to be rehomed – or any other dog that takes your fancy.
If you’ve got your heart set on a Pomeranian, you’ll want to know how much these little pups cost.
In this article, we’ll take a look at the price of Pomeranians, as well as where you can find reputable Pom breeders.

What is a Pomeranian?
Although they’re usually referred to as Pomeranians, they also go by the following names: Pom, Pom Pom, Zwergspitz, Zwers, Spitz Enano, Spitz Main, Deustche Spitze and Loulou.
Where do Pomeranians come from?
The Pom breed was initially developed in the northern region of Poland and Germany along the Baltic Sea.
Britain’s second-longest serving monarch Queen Victoria is thought to have played a big role in the breed’s development.
The Queen Regent is often credited with having reduced the size of the Pomeranian from 30 inches to the toy size that we’re familiar with in modern society.
The first Pomeranian club was created in England in 1891 before Poms were registered as a breed with the American Kennel Club in 1898.
The AKC list Pomeranians as the 23rd most popular dog in the USA.
Pomeranian breed standard
The AKC lists the breed standard for Pomeranians as:
The Pomeranian is a compact, short-backed, active toy dog of Nordic descent. The double coat consists of a short dense undercoat with a profuse harsh-textured longer outer coat. The heavily plumed tail is one of the characteristics of the breed. It is set high and lies flat on the back. He is alert in character, exhibits intelligence in expression, is buoyant in deportment, and is inquisitive by nature. The Pomeranian is cocky, commanding, and animated as he gaits. He is sound in composition and action.

Poms are a toy-sized breed that don’t grow to tall or heavy.
Pomeranians usually grow to a height between six and seven inches (15 to 17 cm). Most Poms will weigh between three and seven pounds (1.3kg to 3kg).
Pomeranians color
When you think of a Pomeranian, there’s a good chance you’ll think of an orange or red fluffy little dog.
Sometimes likened to a fox, these orange or red Poms are the most common variety.
However, there’s a lot of variation within the breed.
The AKC make it clear on their website that a lot of variety is allowed: “all colors, patterns, and variations there-of are allowed and must be judged on an equal basis”.
If you’ve done a lot of research about Pomeranian puppies, there’s a good chance that you’ve seen the following shades listed: white, black, brown, red, orange, cream, blue, sable, black and tan, brown and tan, spotted, brindle, and parti.
Some types of Poms are more in-demand. These rarer colors can cost more than more traditional shades, such as orange or red.
Pomeranian rescue organisations
Before you decide to purchase a Pomeranian puppy, you may want to consider rescuing an abandoned Pom or an elder Pomeranian.
There are a variety of different organisations dedicated to rehoming Pomeranians in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.
Some shelters are designed to accommodate Spitz or northern breeds that need to find a forever home after being abandoned or given up.
One such organisation in the USA is the aptly named Recycled Pomeranians and Schipperkes Rescue based in Dallas, Texas. You can always visit the American Pomeranian Club’s website for more information.
In the UK, you can also visit Pomeranian Rescue or Pomeranian For Life to learn more about Poms that need to be rehomed.

Pomeranian prices can vary from breeder to breeder. It’s important to do you research before you decide to invest money in a puppy.
We strong advise against purchasing a Pom puppy – or any puppy – in one of the following ways: online, pet stores or third party dealers.
Pomeranians can cost between $500 and $1500. Some rare-colored Pomeranians can cost as much as $4000 or $5000.

So you’ve decided that you only want a Pomeranian – a Pom puppy at that. The next step is to find an ethical and reputable breeder.
The best way to do that is to visit American Pomeranian Club’s website. The organisation has a lot of information about breeders.
You can also find some Pomeranian pages on Facebook that provide information to potential Pom owners who are looking to purchase a puppy.
Alternatively, you could contact Pomeranian owners on social media to ask where they got their pup. In doing so, you can ask questions about the health of the dog and any potential problems they’ve encountered.
Most responsible breeders will ask you to fill out a comprehensive questionnaire as well as place a deposit to join their waiting list.
You should ask questions about the puppy’s parents, ask to see the mother if the breeder doesn’t offer the chance to watch the pup interact with its parents, look to get the UKC certification and relevant health check documentation.
Pomeranian costs
Apart from the initial investment, you’ll have to think about the annual costs of owning a Pomeranian. These include food, health insurance and unexpected trips to the vet.
According to Pomeranian.org, you should expect to spend around $1000 a year on your Pom.
Pomeranians health problems
Just like any breed or cross breed or rescue dog, Pomeranians can encounter some health conditions and problems. You should ask your breeder about the health of the pup’s parents before you sign a contract and decide to bring home your little fluff ball.
Pomeranians have been linked with the following health concerns:
• Tracheal collapse
• Canine cataracts
• Severe Hair Loss Syndrome
Other potential health problems include: Entropion, Mono/Bilateral Cryptorchidism, Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, allergies and epilepsy.
Pomeranians life expectancy
Pomeranians have an average lifespan range of between 12 and 16 years. The oldest Pom is thought to have lived to 21 days, eight months and 13 days.
Anything else to consider?
Pomeranians aren’t hypoallergenic and shed a moderate amount. So if you’ve got an allergy to dogs, they’re probably not a good fit for your lifestyle.
Should you still be interested in a Pomeranian puppy, we recommend speaking to an established and experienced breeder. We don’t advise purchasing a dog in a pet shop, online or through a third party breeder.
Like we mentioned above, it’s a good idea to ask to see a puppy’s mother and father, watch the puppy interact with its mother, ask for the AKC and UKC papers for both parents as well as documentation regarding health checks at the vet.
