While Maltipoo aren’t as popular as Labradoodles and Goldendoodles, they’re still a popular member of the Doodle family thanks to their small size and hypoallergenic qualities.

This Maltese Poodle cross don’t usually need as much exercise as some of the working members of the Poodle cross breeds given the Maltese is traditionally considered a companion dog.

However, they’ll still need a balanced and complete diet to fuel their daily lives, whether they live with senior or families with young children.

I’ve experienced firsthand the stress that goes with owning picky eaters as my Alaskan Klee Kai have always been fussy where their food is concerned.

In 2018, my mini huskies started to turn their noses up at the dry food that I had fed them since they were puppies, leading to a spate of health issues.

A chance meeting with a Samoyed owner at the dog park introduced me to the concept of dog food delivery companies and we haven’t looked back since.

These companies usually tailor their meals to meet your dog’s specific needs, using fresh and whole ingredients in their recipes that are formulated by vets.

Furthermore, they’ll ship their meals direct to your door so you won’t have to worry about popping out to the pet store or supermarket.

My Alaskan Klee Kai are obsessed with these meals, much to my delight. They love the human-grade ingredients and usually lick each other’s bowls clean.

I’ve reviewed some of the best dog food delivery companies in the USA available at the moment, including my top pick Nom Nom.

Dog food delivery companies were born out of a necessity for a fresh and wholesome approach to dog nutrition.

What I like about these types of companies is that they usually source their ingredients from local farmers and providers to ensure their meals are high grade as well as supporting local companies.

You can have peace of mind knowing that these dog food companies use vets or vet nutritionists to formulate their meals to make sure their balanced and complete with the minerals and vitamins you need.

Whereas traditional dog food options that you find at the pet store or supermarket may use mystery fillers or meals in their food, this isn’t the case with fresh meals. They use ingredients you’ll recognise.

They’ll usually ask for pet parents to submit key details about their Maltipoo to ensure their specific needs are met, whether they’re a lapdog or a working dog.

We love that some dog food delivery companies use pre-portioned packaging so you won’t have to worry about fussing around with scales or utensils working out the correct portion size.

Once they’ve tailored your Maltipoo’s meals, these dog food delivery companies will ship their meals direct to your door so you won’t have to worry about picking up dog food during your weekly shop again.

Most of these companies will also use eco-friendly packaging so you can feed your Maltipoo these fresh meals and leave a green paw print on our planet.

I was delighted to see the impact of these custom meals on my Alaskan Klee Kai’s happiness and health. They showed great energy levels, their coat looked healthier, their tear stains cleared up and they’re shedding was more manageable.

Crucially, they finished their tailored fresh dog food at every mealtime meaning that their stomach problems were a thing of the past.

• Freshly Prepared – If you’re looking to make a switch to your Maltipoo’s dog food, you may want to consider a dog food delivery company given they’re freshly prepared. They’ll use fresh ingredients that are responsibly sourced to create your Maltipoo’s custom meals. They’ll require pet parents to enter key details about their Maltipoo to allow these dog food delivery companies to tailor their meals to meet your dog’s specific needs. So whether your Maltipoo needs to gain or lose weight, they’ve got you covered.

• Recipe Variety – As I mentioned above, my Alaskan Klee Kai have traditionally been fussy eaters. Some dog food delivery companies will even present dog owners with the chance to order a variety pack.

• Formulated By Vets – You can be rest assured that every dog food delivery company that we’ve reviewed have used at least one vet – if not many more – to formulate their meals. So they won’t be cutting corners and ensuring that all your Maltipoo’s requirements are taken care of.

Most dog food delivery companies will offer a happy pup guarantee. If your dog doesn’t like their meals, you’ll get a full refund.

If your Maltipoo is used to eating dry food and you’d prefer to stick with this form of dog food, there are some tailored dry food options.

You may be accustomed to feeding your dog regular kibble bought at the pet store or supermarket.

However, you may be surprised to learn that some confectionary companies are responsible for manufacturing these types of dry food.

They often use additives and fillers in the kibble rather than fresh and whole ingredients.

However, there are some dry dog food companies who will tailor their kibble to meet your Maltipoo’s specific needs.

They use natural ingredients that are high grade in their recipes, while vets help to formulate this kibble to ensure your Maltipoo is getting all the minerals and nutrients required in their diet.

Just like dog food delivery companies, these dry food options will require basic information about your Maltipoo to allow them to customise your dog’s kibble to their lifestyle.

So you can still stick with a dry food diet but adopt a more modern approach to feeding your Maltipoo.

Best Raw Dog Food

Raw dog food (Photo: Adobe)

You may be thinking about making the switch to a raw fed diet, which has grown in popularity over the past few years.

Having said that, raw dog food is a controversial area of pet nutrition that comes with some pros and cons. We recommend you do thorough research about raw dog food before you make the switch.

If you decide to feed your Maltipoo raw diet, it’ll usually involve raw meat with some fruits and vegetables plus some minerals to take care of their needs. Advocates of raw dog food purport that it’s an appropriate diet for our canines because their ancestors would have eaten raw.

You’ll find that most raw dog food companies will offer a raw diet that is made up of organ meat, muscle meat, whole ground bone, dog-safe fruit and vegetables as well as adding in some minerals and vitamins.

These raw dog food companies will usually carry out bacteria tests on their products given the potential risks this type of dog food can pose to human health and pet health if it isn’t handled with the appropriate care.

We must point out that it’s not advisable to feed your dog a raw dog food diet if you live in a home with an immunocompromised person or young children. You should speak to your local doctor or vet to learn more about the potential risks.

We recommend that you read the FDA’s list of tips and information about raw pet food so you can learn more about this controversial area of dog nutrition to make an informed decision about whether it’s a good fit for you.

Maltipoo are a cross between a Maltese and a Poodle. The result is usually a small-to-medium dog that can make affectionate and loyal companions.

Some Maltipoo could be active dogs but others may enjoy life as a lapdog. Just like any other dog, they can have varying nutritional needs depending on the demands placed upon their lives.

Are Maltipoos Picky Eaters?

Maltipoo can be fussy eaters just like any other purebred or hybrid dog. This behaviour can be triggered by a variety of different factors.

In my experience, my dogs became picky once they had grown tired of their store-bought kibble. It led to my dogs refusing to eat which in turn resulted in acid reflux and vomiting bile.

However, I found making the switch to fresh meals from a dog food delivery company helped to resolve the issue, reigniting their interest in their dog food.

We spoke to a Maltipoo owner called Linie who explained that Daisy is an example of a fussy eater.

They are very fussy eaters and spoilt eaters. Daisy is three now and we just last year found the right dog food that she likes.

Maltipoo Exercise Requirements

While Goldendoodles and Labradoodles will require a lot of exercise to ensure they get sufficient mental and physical stimulation, other Doodle varieties won’t be quite as active.

Maltipoo have moderate exercise needs. Usually, they’ll require around 30 minutes of exercise a day.

Insta-famous Maltipoo Locke loves to go for a walk on the many beaches in San Francisco.

Maltipoos are active. They enjoy a nice long walk or playing fetch at the local park. Locke goes on an adventure every day with her dog walker. Living in beautiful San Francisco, she gets to visit the beach quite a bit!

Willow’s parents find that 30 minutes of daily exercise is sufficient for their Maltipoo.

They don’t need too much exercise, would easily have a 30 min walk a day and be fine but also can do a couple of hours easily.

Maltipoo Health

While cross breeds are usually seen as healthy dogs, some Maltipoo can still encounter some health issues. Alternatively, they could have some intolerances to certain types of food.

For instance, I got an allergy dog test for my Klee Kai and I was surprised to learn that they had a mild intolerance to beef and fish. I was able to adjust their meals accordingly.

Anything Else To Consider?

If you would like to learn more about Maltipoo and what food they may like, we recommend speaking to current Maltipoo owners. We find that pet parents are usually more than forthcoming with advice for potential pet parents.

We must emphasise that you should speak to your vet before you make a change to your dog’s diet. It’s a good idea to read about the pros and cons to particular types of diets.

It’s a good idea to make a gradual transition to a new type of dog food rather than make an immediate switch. Most dog food companies will provide guidelines on how to make the switch to a new food type.

This article does not constitute expert advice and we recommend contacting your vet if you have any concerns or issues. You can also reach out to the company you’re thinking about subscribing to as they’ll usually have experts on hand to offer advice.
