Beagles are active dogs that enjoy regular activity.
They’re a small hound dog that were used as detection and hunting dogs in the 19th century.
The Beagle was first exported to the United States of Americain the 1840s before the American Kennel Club granted the breed status in 1885.
These alert dogs require quite a lot of exercise to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.
Just like any dog, Beagles require a balanced and healthy diet to give them the possible chance of a happy and long life by your side.
If you have a Beagle, you may be accustomed to feeding your canine companion more traditional types of dog food.
However, you may be thinking about adopting a fresh approach to your Beagle’s meals.
In this article, we’re going to take a look at the best dog food for Beagles.

Best Dog Food For Beagles
Beagles are a popular dog breed due to their friendly personalities, big brown puppy dog eyes and charismatic bark. Like all types of dog, purebred or mixed, they need a complete diet to ensure they’re getting all the necessary minerals and vitamins.
You may be used to feeding your Beagle dry food such as kibble or wet food like patte. Alternatively, your dog may have experienced some health issues which has forced you to think twice about what goes into the food you’re feeding your precious pooch.
Having made the switch to a dog food delivery company last year, my dogs have been transformed. My two Alaskan Klee Kai went through some health challenges with their sensitive stomachs, which led to a lack of appetite and regular vomiting.
After some thorough research, I decided to give a dog food delivery company a try after learning their meals are made using human-grade quality ingredients that are fresh and responsibly sourced. There were a number of different recipes to provide me with the choice to select a couple to keep my dogs guessing at mealtime. The meals are customised to your Beagle’s specific need.
These companies deliver your dog’s meals direct to your doorstep, so that’s one thing that you can take off your shopping list. The meals arrive in boxes with lots of ice to ensure they remain fresh. Once you open the box, the serving process is simple.
Having reviewed some of the leading companies in the industry, I rate Nom Nom and Ollie as two of the best options within the dog food delivery market.
For British Beagle owners, we rate Butternut Box and Tails as two of the leading options in the UK.
Sample subscription plan
You’re probably thinking this sounds great but how much does it cost? Well I’ve used our imaginary Beagle called “Snoopy” to give you a rough idea of how much a dog food delivery company subscription will cost.
We signed up Snoopy, who is a three-year old Beagle who is 13 inches tall and weigh 30 pounds. We selected two recipes for Snoopy, beef and pork.
Based upon the information we provided, Snoopy’s owner can expect to pay around $30.68 a week for fresh, healthy meals delivered to their doorstep.

What dog owners say
If you’re thinking about signing up to a dog food delivery company, you may be thinking how other dog owners have fared using such a subscription service. Well we searched for some reviews from pet parents online.
One customer described how her picky dog loves Ollie’s meals after years of eating traditional dog food.
I love this food and this company! After years of sensitive stomach issues, we had Stewie on prescription canned food from the vet. I felt awful about the junk that was in it, but he couldn’t tolerate anything else. I even tried cooking my own organic ingredient food, but he was lacking nutrition. He was always low energy, had stomach and yeast problems, ear infections and bad breath.
However, the switch to a dog food delivery company was transformational:
After one week on Ollie beef formula, he became more alert and more active. We are about four weeks in, his coat is beautiful, his eyes are clear, his breath is great and so are his ears! I love the recyclable products and the customer service is wonderful! I feel so good about the quality ingredients I am feeding our little guy.
Dog Food Delivery Companies
The dog food delivery concept is a relatively new one. Over the past four or five years, there has been a number of different companies offering pet parents the option of a fresh alternative.
These companies use human-grade quality meat in their recipes as well as fresh vegetables. Pet owners can have peace of mind knowing that their four-legged friends are getting the very best.
The meals contain the necessary minerals and vitamins to ensure your dog is getting everything they need to live a complete life. These companies have an array of veterinary nutritionists at their disposal to formulate the meals to ensure the recipes tick all the necessary boxes.
Your dog’s meals are tailored to your pup’s needs based upon the information you’ve entered in the sign-up questionnaire. So whether your dog is active, needs to shed some pounds, has allergies, you can enter the relevant information and this will be taken into consideration.
The meals arrive packed in a box with plenty of insulation and ice to keep them fresh. Most of the packets or containers will go into your freezer, while you can keep enough for the first couple of days in the fridge. When it’s mealtime, the process is simple. If you’ve got packets, you simply rip and serve. Otherwise you’ll have a customised scooper to use with your container.
In my experience, switching to a dog food delivery company was the best decision I’ve made. My two Alaskan Klee Kai are always motivated at dinnertime. They love their fresh meals. I alternative between three recipes to keep them guessing. Since making the switch to a dog food delivery company, we haven’t visited the vet. This is our longest stretch without a tummy issue since we got our dogs in 2017!
Reasons to try dog food delivery companies
We’ve touched upon the basics where dog food delivery companies are concerned but let’s look in a little more detail about the potential perks of signing up to one of these meal plans.
• Freshly prepared meals – The meals provided by these companies use the freshest ingredients. The underlying philosophy of dog food delivery companies appears to be if it’s not good enough for human consumption, we shouldn’t expect our dogs to eat it.
• Customised to your dog – When you start the sign up process, you will be asked to enter key information about your dog such as age, weight, activity level, body type and allergies. This allows dog food delivery companies to tailor their meals to meet your dog’s requirements.
• Variety of recipes – In my experience with fussy dogs, I know how it feels to have pups who can quickly become bored with their meals. While my Klee Kai haven’t turned their nose up at these meals yet, I avail of the variety of recipes on offer to keep them guessing.
• Formulated by experts – This all sounds great but do these meals have the input of experts? In our research, all the dog food delivery companies we reviewed use veterinary nutritionists to help formulate their meals.
• Portion control – It would be counter intuitive to feed your dog too much of their new healthy meals and create a weight problem! The good news is the meals are usually pre portioned. So you won’t have to worry about overfeeding your pet.
• Motivated dogs at meal time – If you’ve ever experienced your dogs being picky at mealtime, then you’ll be able to relate to the feeling of relief and satisfaction seeing your canine companion showing a passionate interest in their meals.
• Efficient and reliable deliveries – You’re relying on these dog food delivery companies to be efficient, punctual and reliable. We haven’t had a bad experience so far. The deliveries arrive on the day they’re scheduled.
• Flexible subscription plans – You could be worried about being tied into a long-term meal plan. Most of the dog food delivery companies provide the option to pause or end your subscription at any given time.
This wouldn’t be an impartial review if we didn’t touch upon some negatives.
The biggest challenge I had was fitting all the meals in my freezer. If you’ve got a small freezer, you’ll have to be smart about how you use space. The majority of meals will be stored in the freezer with 3-5 left in the fridge ready to serve in the next couple of days.
Meals from dog food delivery companies aren’t cheap. I’ve had to alter my budget for other things in order to get these meals. I consider it a worthwhile sacrifice given my dogs love mealtime now! They’ve not had any tummy issues since we made the switch which is proof enough for me that these meals must be having a positive impact.
The ancient ancestors of the Beagle can be traced back to the 5th century in Greece. The Beagle as we know it today was first developed in England.
Historical figures such as William the Conqueror and Queen Elizabeth I were thought to have been associated with an early type of Beagle.
The Beagle breed grew in popularity in the 19th century as dogs used to follow scents and to help in foxhunts. Reverend Phillip Honeywood started a Beagle pack in Essex, United Kingdom in 1830 before Thomas Johnson refined the breed.
The first Beagles arrived in the USA in the 1840s before they were granted recognition by the American Kennel Club in 1885. The AKC rate the Beagle as the sixth most popular breed in the USA.
Beagles appearance and size
Beagles come in two sizes. The smaller size are 13 inches and under, while they weigh under 20 pounds. The larger variety are between 13 and 15 inches, while they can weigh between 20 and 30 pounds.
Beagles exercise requirements
Beagles are dog breed that like to be outdoors. They need regular exercise to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.
Wag Walking recommend at least 60 minutes of exercise a day for these dogs, while you can rack at least 12 miles a week walking your Beagle.
Given their role as scent dogs in centuries past, you won’t be surprised to learn that Beagles can be a flight risk as they follow their nose.
Beagles are a relatively healthy breed but they’re prone to some health issues. These conditions include hip dysplasia, epilepsy, luxating patella and eye disorders
You won’t want to overfeed your Beagle to avoid weight issues which could lead to over health problems due to too much pressure being put on joints etc.
Anything else to consider?
We suggest speaking to your vet before you switch your Beagle to a new diet. If you decide to go ahead and sign up to a dog food delivery company, they’ll usually provide a guideline to gradually introduce their new food into their diet. If you switch too fast, you could cause a tummy upset or diarrhea.
This article does not constitute expert advice and we recommend contacting your vet if you have any concerns or issues.
You can also reach out to the company you’re thinking about subscribing to as they’ll usually have experts on hand to offer advice.
