Alaskan Klee Kai have a reputation for being fussy eaters.

Recognised by the United Kennel Club as a breed since 1997, Alaskan Klee Kai are a companion-sized Spitz dog.

Although not every Spitz-type dog suffers with sensitive stomachs or are picky eaters, it does seem relatively common amongst these type of canines.

I know from my experience as an Alaskan Klee Kai owner that there’s nothing worse than seeing your dog turn their nose up at their food.

This is a battle I struggled with for a year or so before I came across dog food delivery companies.

These companies produced home-cooked meals using human-grade ingredients that are customised to meet your Klee Kai’s needs before being shipped direct to your door.

In this article, we’re going to take a look at the best dog food for Alaskan Klee Kai.

Alaskan Klee Kai are a relatively new dog breed given they were only created in the 1970s by an American lady called Linda Spurlin.

They come in three different sizes: standard, miniature and toy. Irrespective of their size, you can expect a Klee Kai to be an energetic breed.

Klee Kai will enjoy regular walks, trips to the dog park, hikes in the countryside and playtime at home, all of which requires their bodies to be fuelled.

However, Alaskan Klee Kai can be fussy eaters and it’s not uncommon to hear about AKK turning their nose up at their food, reluctantly having a nibble or suffering from tummy problems.

My Klee Kai, Copper and Skye, used to be picky when it came to their food. They wouldn’t eat dry food or wet food irrespective of brand. Some of the brands would give them stomach problems and when they were completely refusing their meals, it led to acid build up and eventually vomiting.

I was recommended a dog food delivery company by a fellow dog owner at the dog park and I haven’t looked back since making the switch. My Klee Kai love their balanced and complete meals, which are created using fresh fruit and vegetables as well as USDA-approved meat.

It’s a fair assessment to say Copper and Skye are now obsessed with their meals. They’ll sit by their bowl when they know it’s mealtime, lick their bowls clean and even lick each other’s bowls to make sure there’s no leftovers.

Having looked at the best dog food delivery companies in the USA, I can recommend Nom Nom and Ollie, having tried both of their recipes on my Klee Kai.

What Alaskan Klee Kai customers say

I can vouch for the benefits of these meals from dog food delivery companies having seen firsthand the positive impact a fresh approach can have.

As I mentioned above, my two Klee Kai were extremely picky about their food, which was causing a big headache because we couldn’t get them to eat their meals.

We tried dry food, wet food, customised dry food without any luck. It wasn’t until we met a Samoyed owner at a dog park that we were introduced to the dog food delivery concept.

It was staggering how quickly my Klee Kai were transformed into greedy little dogs. They were so excited about their meals and now sit by their bowls when they think it’s time to eat.

We’ve also saved money on trips to the vet, which were becoming a regular occurrence due to stomach problems arising from their lack of nutrition.

I’ve also recommended Nom Nom and Ollie to a number of other Klee Kai owners in the USA, including AKKs called Belle and Mercer. They’ve had a similar positive experience with these meals.

Dog Food Delivery Companies

The dog food delivery market has exploded over the past few years as pet owners wake up to some of the additives or nasties that can go into some traditional dog food options.

We take such precautions to ensure we’re eating a healthy diet full of minerals and nutrients that we need to function at our optimum level but we can forget to take the same duty of care with our dogs.

Dog food delivery companies only use fresh ingredients that you can say. There’s no mystery fillers. Their meat is USDA-approved or the British equivalent.

They provide a range of recipes to ensure even fussy eaters will find something they like.

By entering key details about your dog, these dog food delivery companies can tailor their meals to meet your canine companion’s specific requirements.

I’ve recommended these meals to colleagues and friends, and some were initially skeptical about how their dogs would react given a picky tendency.

With each person I’ve suggested, they’ve spoken about their absolute surprise at how excited their dog was before the dog bowl hit the ground and then how quickly they finished their meal.

• Formulated by experts – You can have peace of mind knowing that these meals are formulated by veterinarian experts. They make sure these freshly prepared recipes are balanced and complete.

• Portion control – We love that some dog food delivery companies pre portion their meals. So you won’t have to worry about overfeeding your dog. You simply open the packet and pour into the bowl.

• Motivated dogs at meal time – Tying into the fussy eater theme, you’ll be surprised to see your dog motivated at mealtime again. You might not believe your eyes. I know these meals have surprised quite a few dog owners, myself included.

• Efficient and reliable deliveries – In the age of coronavirus, we can’t leave our homes unless we really have to go outside. The good news is that these meals are delivered direct to your doorstep on a regular deliveries.

Any negatives?

This wouldn’t be an impartial review without touching upon some areas for improvement.

We all like to save money and these meals aren’t as cheap as traditional dog food that you’d buy at the supermarket or pet store. However, there is a long-term benefit to consider. You’ll be feeding your dog fresh and healthy meals. They’ll be getting a complete and balanced diet that should hopefully result in less trips to the vet. It saved me money in vet costs.

The other big consideration is freezer space! You can keep meals for a couple of days in fridge but the rest will need to be frozen. Depending on the size of your freezer, you may need to order once every two weeks, once a month, once every two months. You may need to adopt a fresh approach to your own diet to ensure you’ve got the freezer space!

Alaskan Klee Kai

Alaskan Klee Kai are a Spitz-type dog that were created by a lady called Linda Spurlin in the 1970s. They were bred to look like huskies but be companion size.

Spurlin used Alaskan Husky, Siberian Husky, American Eskimo and Schipperke to develop and refine her Alaskan Klee Kai.

They were made available to the public in the late 1980s before the United Kennel Club recognised the Alaskan Klee Kai as a breed in 1997.

As of today, you can only breed a Klee Kai using two UKC-registered Klee Kai.

There are thought to be around 13,000 Alaskan Klee Kai in the world.

Alaskan Klee Kai come in three different sizes: standard, miniature and toy. The UKC’s breed standard lists their colors as black and white, gray and white and red and white. However, white AKK and mostly black AKK do exist. Their eye colors can range from blue, brown, bi eyes and parti eye.

They’ve got a similar appearance to a Siberian Husky with a striking mask.

Alaskan Klee Kai exercise requirements

In my experience, Alaskan Klee Kai can be quite adept at adjusting to your routine. So if you’re an active person, Klee Kai are happy to have multiple walks, hikes or jogs a day. If you live a more relaxed lifestyle, they’re happy to potter around the house with you and cozy up on the sofa for a nap.

If you’re AKK does have an active lifestyle whether it be regular walks or jogs, or perhaps participating in agility or shows, you’ll want to make sure your Alaskan Klee Kai is appropriately fuelled.

Alaskan Klee Kai health

Alaskan Klee Kai are such a need breed that the health problems affecting these dogs isn’t clear at this stage. Overall, they’re a happy and healthy breed. As I mentioned earlier in this article, they can be picky eaters with sensitive stomachs.

Anything else to consider?

As with any breed or mix, you shouldn’t make an immediate switch to a new type of dog food. You’ll want to make a gradual transition to their new food. So it’s a good idea to slowly introduce their new food.

This article does not constitute expert advice and we recommend contacting your vet if you have any concerns or issues. You can also reach out to the company you’re thinking about subscribing to as they’ll usually have experts on hand to offer advice.
